Original works are charcoal on wood panels of the same size and style, so these prints approximate the original images very closely.

About Excavating Identity:

In “Excavating Identity,” I use drawing to maintain my connection to Egypt by investigating designs found in a single Egyptian “khayamiya” applique tent textile. Charcoal is a tool for cultural "excavation." On each wood panel, I focus on a single cropped segment of the overall applique design isolated from the whole, responding to each unique section of the textile individually within each square. Each of the nine drawings is an artifact, only showing a piece of the complete design, the modular sections almost aligning but not quite. The mark making explores, digs, measures, and defines, striving to uncover identity while never quite bringing the complete image into focus.
